As temperatures dip, the City of Terrace is providing a reprieve for its parched lawns. Effective on Sept. 5, the city is loosening its lawn watering restrictions, though urging continued prudence given persistent drought conditions throughout British Columbia.

According to a press release from the city, residents are now permitted to sprinkle and water their lawns between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. However, the schedule is strictly determined by residents’ street addresses. Odd-numbered homes can sprinkle and water on odd-numbered days within the mentioned times, while even-numbered addresses are allowed on even-numbered days.

Notably, for green-thumbs tending to flowers and shrubs, hand-sprinkling with a controlled nozzle is permissible at any time.

But despite the ease in restrictions, the city emphasized that B.C.’s drought conditions are still a pressing concern. Provincially, the drought levels, gauged on a five-point scale, are consistently marked at four or five across various B.C. water basins.

The city’s press release pointedly reminded its residents: “We are lucky to live in a rainforest — the Skeena-Nass Basin is at Drought Level 3 (Adverse Impacts Possible) currently – but that doesn’t mean our water supply is any less valuable.” With forest fire season looming, there’s a palpable need for the city to maintain water levels, as conditions could rapidly shift.

Terrace officials were keen to express gratitude towards its community, commending their “sensible and moderate use of water.”

The initial ban on lawn sprinkling and watering was enacted in early July and was subsequently extended the following month.
