It was successful sparring for members of the Atlantis Tae Kwon Do Club, as 25 members journeyed to Jasper to compete in a tournament and 25 medals were brought back.
In total, 45 people made the trip to participate in or observe the 2011 International Chang-hon Taekwon-do Federation Western Canadian tournament, which hosted 400 competitors from Alberta and B.C.
Cody Skog, owner and teacher of Atlantis Tae Kwon Do Club, is very happy with the trip and said all of his students performed well. He said a highlight was most of the group travelling together by train, which created a fun, holiday-like atmosphere.
Skog placed well in the tournament but the big news for him on trip was the achievement of his fourth degree blackbelt.
Sandy Watson attended the tournament with her daughter Olivia and said it was a lot of fun.
“It’s a good opportunity for the kids to showcase what they have worked on all year,” she said.
The club will be wrapping up its season pretty soon, but Skog plans to run tae kwon do fitness camps this summer, which will be open to people with all levels of experience.
Cody Skog received gold in patterns, silver in sparring and a 4th degree black belt. Jared Daumont won gold in sparring and bronze in patterns. Kain Shannon won bronze in both patterns and sparring. Olivia Faetz won silver in high kick. Jorja Marx received bronze in sparring, as did Sophie MacDonald who also won gold in patterns. Maxwell Scott won a bronze in patterns, and Nick Scott
took a silver in both patterns and sparring. Nick Hayward won gold in patterns and bronze in high kick. Rod Hayward took bronze in sparring. Malcolm Neifer won gold in sparring and silver in high kick. Drake Payne received a gold in sparring.
Yava Skog won bronze in sparring, and Aidyn Larkin took a gold in sparring and bronze in patterns. Shiloh Skog received bronze in patterns, and Olivia Nagy took three medals with a silver in both patterns and sparring, and bronze in high kick.
