Terrace athletes secure multiple medals at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games

Despite severe weather, local athletes Terrace contributed to four medal-winning teams

Terrace and area athletes were on four teams bringing home medals from the North American Indigenous Games that wrapped up July 22 in Halifax.

Intense rains and storms resulted in cancellations or adjustments to final games for some medal standings but local athletes and their teams weren’t affected.

Rayham Davis was the goalie on the gold medal winning U16 boys soccer team, coming out on top in that age category thanks to a 2-1 final game win over Team Alberta. In three games, just one goal was scored against the B.C. team.

Caledonia Secondary School student Adrianna Nisyok, a long time participant in the Terrace Youth Soccer Association league, will also be bringing home a gold medal by virtue of being on the U16 girls soccer team.

It defeated Team Saskatchewan by a score of 2-1 in its final game and went undefeated in Halifax.

The U19 boys basketball team, with Terrace local Michael Morven as one of its members, beat Team Ontario in triple overtime, winning a bronze medal.

Skeena Middle School students Marcus Smith and Braunson Slack can also claim bronze medals thanks to a 43-31 win over Team Minnesota. And that was after losing a semi-final match by just one point.

The U19 girls basketball with Dakota Price as one of its players fell short in the bronze medal game to the squad from Wisconsin.

And losing in a bronze medal game was the U16 boys softball team. Team Ontario won that match 12-5. Tristen Wallington and Gabe Ridler from Terrace were on that team.

Skeena Middle School student Victoria Stanley was on the U14 girls basketball team that fell to Manitoba by a score of 44-34 in a quarter-final match.
