Dust, sand are harmful

Dear Sir:

Chris Mann is evidently a careful driver as suggested in his March 16, 2011 letter to the editor, “What’s with all the mud?”

Others, however, are less so, and the “mud” – sand – that the city puts down is to protect them from themselves.  It is also to protect pedestrians.

The greater problem is the consequent spring dust storms.

Aside from the ugliness, the health risks, especially to children’s lungs, are very real.

The sooner the city dusts up, the better.  Hosing streets and sidewalks would be better still, and merchants could take the lead.

For cleaner streets, we should drive less.

We will, eventually, as driving becomes increasingly recognized as a crime against the future – think global warming.

A final thanks to the city road works for taking care of us, despite ourselves.
