September 4, 1943 - September 13, 2023
In loving memory ~
John Wiebenga, beloved husband, father, Opa, brother, and friend went home to his Lord on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at the age of 80.
John was born in Sneek, The Netherlands, on September 4, 1943. He was one of 5 children with 2 older brothers and 2 younger sisters. He immigrated to Canada in 1952, with his family, at the age of 9. He met Angie when he was 18 years old, and they were married on September 3, 1966. They were married for 57 beautiful years.
John worked as a baker for almost 50 years, with 24 of those at the Terrace Co-op, and the last 5 years as co-owner of the Cookie Jar Bakery. After he retired, he enjoyed travelling with Angie to warm places and to visit often with friends and family. He treasured his family deeply and demonstrated his love for his wife, children, and grandchildren in countless ways. There were not many school or sporting events for his grandchildren that he missed, no matter the distance, and they each knew how special they were to him. He enjoyed being in creation with family camping adventures and a lifetime of trips to the river to catch fish. Being active in the community was important to him and he volunteered at the fish hatchery and Terrace Church's Food Bank for many years. John had deep faith in his Saviour and faithfully served in his church as a deacon, small group leader, men's prayer group and wherever help was needed.
John was predeceased by both his parents, Haije and Grietje Wiebenga, and his parents-in-law, Sake Ale and Martha Gerber, his brothers, Harry and Peter Wiebenga and his brother-in-laws Bill Vandop, Gerald Gerber, and his niece, Wendy Muller.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Angie, and their three children: Elaine (Edgar) Veldman, Michael (Karen) Wiebenga, and Debbie (Jimmy) Mantel, and their ten grandchildren: Kenton (Dani) Veldman, Hannah (Devin) Eekhoff, Evan Veldman, Justin Wiebenga, Jackson Wiebenga, Foster Wiebenga, Dylan Mantel, Hope Mantel-Azak, Skylar Mantel and Drake Azak. John is also survived by his two sisters Margaret Vanderwal and Sandra Vandop, sisters-in-law Grace Wiebenga, Ineke McLean, and Nancy Gerber, and his three brothers-in-law Chuck (Margaret) Gerber, Henry (Karen) Gerber, and Peter (Kathe) Gerber, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, October 6, 2023, at the Terrace Christian Reformed Church.
