She was predeceased by her parents William (Bill) and Anna Thornton of Prince Rupert BC and her sister Elizabeth (Thornton) Leuschen.
Irene was born in Prince Rupert BC, but lived most of her early years in Terrace BC. It was in Terrace that she met and married who she often referred to as the "Love of Her Life", John B. Smyth in 1966.
Irene devoted her life to her family, was active in community, outdoor activities and was especially fond of camping and fishing with favorite places on the Skeena River, Lucy Island, Squadaree and Haida Guaii. Irene was an accomplished artist and ceramist winning "Masters Recognition" in International Competitions.
Irene was a gemologist specializing in diamonds and other precious stones, which she loved. She enjoyed knitting and sewing, making wonderful Victorian lampshades to sell on her website.
Irene enjoyed many international business trips with John to Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Panama, Brazil, Chile, England, Wales, Ireland and Germany. But her favorite was return trips home to Terrace to visit family, friends and to fish......
A Celebration of Irene's Life will be held in Terrace BC with the location, date, and time yet to be determined.
