WestJet to cut Terrace to Calgary route

The move comes barely a year after service began in May 2015

WestJet has announced the end of its direct Terrace to Calgary service.

The service began early last May and the last flight will be March 5, one of a series of flight cuts to and from Alberta announced by the airline yesterday.

WestJet uses a Dash 8-400 for the two-hour flight under its Encore designation.

Also going is a direct Prince George to Calgary connection as are flights from Edmonton to Kamloops and Nanaimo.

Service to Abbotsford and to Penticton is being cut back as well.

The introduction of the Terrace to Calgary service was regarded as a sign of a growing northwestern B.C. market tied to energy and other large-scale industrial activity.

Analysts are saying the service reduction between Alberta and B.C. on the part of WestJet is a reflection of the low price of oil and its effect on the economy.

Air Canada also introduced a Terrace to Calgary service last spring and cancelled it late last year.
