The Terrace RCMP responded to approximately 322 calls for service between Dec. 19, 2022 and Jan. 1, 2023.
Unlicensed driver and vehicle Impound
On Dec. 19, RCMP conducted a traffic stop in Terrace with an unlicensed driver. The driver provided his identity and admitted to being unlicensed. The driver of the vehicle was issued a notice of driving prohibition, a violation ticket for no driver’s license and vehicle was impounded for 7 days.
Vehicle collides with house
On the afternoon of Dec. 21, RCMP received a report of a pickup truck which had crashed into a house on the south side of Terrace. The driver reported a medical issue which caused him to temporarily loose consciousness and veer off of the roadway. Neither the driver nor the occupants of the home were injured.Police issued a violation ticket to the driver and the vehicle was towed away.
Thief arrested, items returned
Dec. 26, staff at Walmart reported a suspect who had just wandered through the store filling a bag with items. The suspect then departed the store with the items, refusing to pay. Staff reported the theft to police and gave a description of the man. The man was located shortly after matching the description provided and in possession of stolen items from the store. The man was arrested for theft and released on conditions with a court date. The results of the investigation will be forwarded to BC Prosecution Services for consideration of charges.
Break-and-enter suspects caught in the act
Terrace RCMP responded to an off-site report from a security company of two suspects inside the locked compound at PNG on Dec. 29 around 1:30 a.m. Police attended the fenced compound and once inside, located two men both in possession of break in tools and trying to break in to a truck. Numerous vehicles were noted in the compound to have broken windows. The cost of damage to vehicles is estimated at approximately $1,200, while the value of equipment which was prevented from being stolen is estimated at approximately $11,000. The suspects were arrested on scene for a number of offences and were held in custody to appear before a judge on Dec. 29. The pair have been remanded in custody at this time until a future court date.
A safe New Year’s Eve on the roads
On New Year’s Eve and Day, the Terrace RCMP were out on the roads in full force. A number of check stops were set up at numerous different locations around Terrace and Thornhill to check for sober, licensed drivers. Several violation tickets were issued for offences such as no insurance and failing to produce driver’s license. Verbal warnings were also issued for minor infractions. Approximately 300 vehicles were checked over the course of the evening.
The RCMP want to thank Terrace’s local McDonalds for donating free coffee coupons for designated drivers to help support their efforts. Apart from the check stops, police received one report of an impaired driver. Following an impaired investigation, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. A violation ticket was issued in this matter for driving contrary to license and failing to display L.
Reminder to stay safe on the ice
On the afternoon of Jan. 1, two snowmobiles broke through the ice on Lakelse Lake near Gruchy’s Beach. One machine was completely submerged and the other partially, after foggy conditions set them off course toward open water. Two men were involved in the incident and were able to make their way back to shore leaving the snowmobiles behind. Terrace Search and Rescue assisted in the incident and EHS transported the man to hospital for treatment to injury. RCMP are reminding the public to stay safe on the ice this winter as weather and environmental conditions can change quickly.
