Travellers looking to cross the Skeena River via the Usk Ferry will have to find alternative routes. The ferry, located about 16 kilometres northeast of Terrace and 0.8 kilometres off Highway 16, is currently out of service due to low river levels on the Skeena River, according to Drive BC.

The Usk Ferry is an essential link between south and north Usk, connecting it to Highway 16. With a carrying capacity of 10 tonnes GVW and space for up to 12 passengers, including drivers, the ferry is designed to transport two vehicles or a single vehicle combination, provided they do not exceed a length of 12 metres.

Under normal conditions, crossing times are typically quick, ranging from five to seven minutes.

The ferry operates on an on-demand basis, starting its service at 6:45 a.m. and ending at 11:15 p.m.

In light of the ferry’s suspension, the Usk Cable Car remains operational and can be used as an alternative mode of crossing for residents and travellers in the area.

This is not the first disruption in the ferry’s operations this year. The Usk Ferry was previously halted during the flooding events that affected Terrace in May.

As river levels fluctuate, those looking to utilize the ferry are encouraged to monitor updates on Drive BC’s website before planning their travel.
