Nathan Cullen is set to represent Skeena – Bulkley Valley once again with fully 55 per cent of the popular vote as 50 of the riding’s 219 polls have now reported in.
Cullen has 5.153 votes compared to Conservative Tyler Nesbitt who has 2,017 votes or 22 per cent of the vote.
And Liberal Brad Layton has 1,635 votes or 17 per cent of the vote.
Skeena – Bulkley Valley Liberal candidate Brad Layton, while unsuccessful personally this evening, is in an upbeat mood.
“I’m ecstatic, we needed change and I’m 100 per cent behind the platform of the Liberal party,” said Layton this evening from his Smithers campaign office.
“We’ve already been checked off as elected to NDP here, I’m hoping that Nathan Cullen will work as hard as he can to make sure that we see the benefits with the Liberal government.”
Layton said he and his party workers knew Cullen would be a strong candidate.
In the Skeena – Bulkley Valley riding, NDP incumbent Nathan Cullen is hoping to repeat wins in 2011, 2008, 2006 and 2004.
Cullen received a clear majority of support in the 2011 election with 55 per cent of the vote, compared to the 34.5 per cent for Conservative Clay Harmon. Liberal Kyle Warwick had 3.6 per cent, Green Roger Benham had 3.1 per cent, Rod Taylor from the Christian Heritage Party had 2.96 per cent, and Maggie Braun from Canadian Action had 0.47 per cent of the vote.
First elected in 2004 with 31.7 per cent of the vote, Cullen’s share of the vote has climbed ever since – to 48.33 per cent in 2006 and 49.84 per cent in 2008.
Close to twice as many voters cast ballots in advance polling here in four days over the Thanksigiving long weekend in our riding compared to the last federal election.
Preliminary estimates show that 8,322 voters cast their ballots in the electoral district of Skeena-Bulkley Valley during the four days of advance voting October 9-12, according to numbers released today, Oct. 14 by Elections Canada..
In advance voting in the last election in 2011, a total of 4,553 voters cast ballots in Skeena-Bulkley Valley.
There are 63,459 people on the Skeena -Bukley Valley voters’ list and that does not include those who registered on election day.
