It’s been 31 years since the country separated from the Soviet Union

People passing by city hall in Terrace this morning would have noticed something different — a large Ukrainian flag draped over the cenotaph.

That’s because Aug. 24 is regarded as Ukrainian Independence Day, the day when Ukraine officially separated itself from the Soviet Union via a declaration of independence on that day in 1991.

Ukraine president, Volodymyr Zelensky, marked the 31st anniversary of independence with a speech, calling the country “reborn” since the Russian invasion of earlier this year.

“On Feb. 24, we were told: You have no chance. On Aug. 24, we say: Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!” Zelenskyy said in a recorded video.

A display of captured Russian tanks and other vehicles in the country’s capital of Kyiv replaced what would have been a parade.
