On Feb. 29, 2024, the Thornhill Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the intersection of Kenworth St. and Queensway at around 3:12 p.m. The fire originated under the carport of a house, but quickly spread to the home.

Upon arrival, 12 firefighters used two hand lines to contain the blaze which spread into the home’s interior and onto the roof. Two fire engines were at the scene.

After containing the exterior fire, firefighters entered the home to ensure the fire would not spread throughout the interior.

Primary damage was confined to the carport, though extensive smoke throughout and water damage in the basement were noted, said Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department chief Rick Boehm. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The RCMP, an ambulance and people from various utility companies were also present.

Accommodation and necessities were provided by the Kitimat-Stikine regional district’s emergency services section.

The cause of the fire is under investigation however Boehm called it “non-suspicious.”
