The Old Skeena Bridge, a crucial link connecting Terrace and Thornhill, was shut down to traffic on Sept. 14.
The closure comes as the City of Terrace readies for road resurfacing between Apsley Street, near the Royal Canadian Legion building and the bridge.
City of Terrace Communications Advisor Kate Lautens said the paving contractor gave the city little notice it needed the bridge closed. Despite the prompt decision to close off traffic, the exact date for the commencement of the paving work remains undetermined.

“We don’t have an actual date for the paving of the road, but it should be soon,” Lautens said.
Originally, the paving was timed to align closely with the completion of rehabilitation work on the Old Skeena Bridge. However, the bridge repairs, which started in July 2022, concluded faster than anticipated.
As a result, the bridge reopened earlier than expected in late May. The city found itself unable to reschedule the paving contract, leading to the bridge’s closure ahead of the resurfacing.
Residents and commuters are advised to make note of the closure and plan their routes accordingly until further notice.
