Terrace RCMP responded to approximately 281 calls between Aug. 29 and Sept. 4. Of those calls 109 occurred over the weekend from Friday to Sunday.
Bear spray attacks
On Aug. 29 at around 6:30 a.m. a woman reported to have been pepper sprayed in the downtown area. She was receiving medical treatment from EHS and believed she knew the name of the man responsible for the assault. A few hours later a second report was received of a victim who had been assaulted with pepper spray by a man, again in the downtown core. The victim had also been robbed of his money and the victim provided the same name for the suspect.
A short time later, police received a third call from a local store advising that two staff members had been bear sprayed by a man who was in their store. Video surveillance from the store confirmed the identity of the man to be the same as in the first two incidents.
Police located the suspect and arrested him shortly thereafter for assault with a weapon. He was also found to be in possession of additional items believed to be stolen. The man was held in custody for court and police submitted their investigation to BC Prosecution Services for consideration of charges. He was released with a future court date to deal with charges.
Buyer beware
On August 29, a man reported that he had been scammed out of $1,200 in a rental property scam. After conversing with someone over Facebook regarding terms and conditions as well as address and pictures, the man sent a bank transfer to the scammer. He later attended what he believed to be the rental property only to discover that the address was not for rent. Police are investigating the matter and cautioning the public of the old saying ‘buyer beware.’ Always look into things a little further to determine if it is real, and if something appears too good to be true, it likely is.
Man waving knives
Police were dispatched to a report of a suspicious man waving knives around behind an RV park on Highway 16 West on Sept. 2. Police attended and located the man who was showing signs of intoxication and suspected mental health issues. The man was still in possession of brass knuckles when police arrived but relinquished them willingly. He was arrested and released once sober with a court date.
Unsafe vehicle
On Sept. 3, BC Highway Patrol officer observed an older pick up truck with numerous violations and saw that it was struggling to drive. Police conducted a traffic stop and found the driver to be prohibited from driving. The vehicle was impounded for 7 days, and the driver was issued a court date.
