Terrace firefighters had to act quickly March 7 to extinguish a fire just before 1 p.m. at the back of a house which had spread to neighbouring new construction.

“Due to the fast flame spread and strong wind conditions, the under construction apartment building adjacent to the residence was starting to combust,” said fire chief Chad Cooper of the fire which began at the back of one of four homes on the 4500 Block of Lazelle right behind St. Matthew’s Anglican Church.

Exterior framing of the apartment-style building is now complete and workers had mainly shifted to the inside of the structure.

Firefighters were already on the block, an unpaved laneway of Lazelle Ave., assisting RCMP officers who earlier that day had raided one of the neighbouring homes.

“Firefighters were on scene for an hour after fire extinguishment to ensure the exterior fire at the residence had not transferred into the interior. No injuries were reported and the fire cause is under fire investigation,” Cooper said.

The chief said he was proud of the crew for its quick action to contain the blaze.

“The firefighters have been training extremely hard over the last six months to improve their efficiencies on fire scenes to continue to provide the best service to our residents.” Cooper added.

“Protecting our community housing supply is a top priority of the fire department especially with the housing shortage experienced within our community.”
