With the federal election inching closer, MP hopefuls are coming out of the woodwork.
From Terrace, Maggie Braun has announced she will run for the Canadian Action Party.
“The monetary reform policy is vital to restoring and protecting our sovereignty, freedom and democracy,” said Braun.
“This can only truly be done through grassroots movements, for the people, by the people,” she said.
Another opposition hopeful, Laurence Knowles, with the Rhinoceros Party, has also announced his candidacy.
The Haida Gwaii resident said he would like to see hunters use machine guns and make stapler users register before purchasing.
Running for the Green Party is Smithers resident Roger Benham, who believes that capitalism is not sustainable.
“Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all,” he said.
The Liberal Party nominated 22-year-old Kyle Warwick, a UBC political science student, from Vancouver.
Warwick has said he will do his best to listen to the people here, and provide another voting alternative for the region.
Running for the Christian Heritage Party here is Rod Taylor.
Taylor, a Smithers resident, is running on an anti-abortion platform. He believes that all life is sacred — including unborn babies.
Next on the list of Candidates is Conservative hopeful Clay Harmon.
Harmon, from Terrace, is supportive of business and economic opportunity in the area, and believes that government policy should support these opportunities.
And NDP candidate, and current MP, Nathan Cullen from Smithers is back again.
Cullen was first elected in 2004, and hopes to continue his position as MP for the Skeena Bulkey Riding.
Today is the deadline for candidates to announce their nomination. Elections Canada has all candidates officially listed save for Knowles. The candidates list will be confirmed by April 13.
The vote is set to take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 2.
For voters in Terrace, dates and polling locations have already been set.
A number of Terrace election-day locations are confirmed. Veritas School on Straume St., the Birch Building at Northwest Community College, Elks Hall on Tetrault St. at Hwy 16 and Thornhill Community Centre will all have polling stations set up.
But registered voters can only vote at their assigned location.
Specific locations are on each voter information card.
The cards were mailed April 6. If residents do not receive their cards by April 13, or the information on their card is incorrect, Elections Canada encourages voters to call or visit their local office.
The Terrace office is located in the Skeena Mall, and the telephone number is (866) 271 5377.
Residents who can’t vote on election day can vote two alternate ways. First, advanced polling dates are on Friday April 22, Saturday April 23 and Monday April 26 from noon until 8 p.m., at the Elections Canada office in the Skeena Mall.
Or, to vote by special ballot, apply at the office by April 26. Vote there or mail it to Ottawa by 6 p.m. May 2, Eastern Standard Time.
