Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was struck and killed while on the CN rail tracks here early Saturday morning Feb. 10.

The incident occurred on the section of rail line parallel to the 4800 Block of Hwy16 and described as approximately across from Denny’s Restaurant.

There was no immediate information as to how the man, described as being in his 30s, was able to gain access to the rail track area.

“The man is believed to have been alone at the time and the incident is not believed to be suspicious,” Terrace RCMP said in a brief statement.

CN police, the Terrace fire department and the provincial ambulance service as well as RCMP responded.

The provincial coroners service is now investigating the death.

CN officials for years have warned about the dangers of trespassing on rail tracks by those seeking what they consider ia a convenient route from one side of the city to another.

In 2018 alone, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada reported 236 incidents in Canada, resulting in 53 fatalities and 72 serious injuries.

Two people were killed in Terrace in five days in 2016 after being struck by trains while attempting to cross the tracks while in 2021, a man was injured after he was struck by a train. That man was on the tracks and was attempting to get clear of them.

In Kitwanga last November, another man was struck and injured after he as well tried to get off the tracks.

CN officials remind people that trespassing on CN property can result in a fine of $115.

And they say people should only cross tracks at designated public/pedestrian crossings, to obey railway crossing control devices and to never try to beat the train.
