The Kermode Friendship Society is celebrating Indigenous culture at George Little Park in Terrace, hosting a National Indigenous Peoples Day event on June 24.

Indigenous Peoples Day Committee Chair Fiona Broome outlined a day full of activities and cultural enrichment, anticipating more than one thousand attendees, mirroring last year’s successful gathering.

“We’ll have delegates from Kitselas and Kitsumkalum First Nation, dancers from Nisga’a First Nation, Indigenous artist vendors,” Bloome said. Activities, such as moose call and fried bread competitions, a bike decoration contest and a smudging tent will also be featured during the day-long event.

“We had over a thousand people participate, partly due to the farmer’s market held on the same day,” Bloome explained. This introduced a lot of people to the Indigenous communities in the area and their cultural practices, she added.

The Kermode Friendship Society is utilizing this event not just as a cultural showcase but also as an opportunity to connect more deeply with the local community.

“The goal for Kermode is to share what our organization is all about, provide information on what types of services and programming we offer and help Indigenous peoples connect to their culture,” Broome said.

Adding to the cultural activities and exhibitions, Kermode’s outreach team will be on hand to offer naloxone training and distribute naloxone kits, underlining the society’s commitment to community safety.

The festivities will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at George Little Park, located at 4633 Park Ave. in Terrace.
