A controversial inland port train facility development will be discussed at a Terrace city council meeting at 12 p.m. on Oct. 9.
The proposed development would see a facility for loading and unloading shipping containers from trains be built at the former Skeena Cellulose sawmill site, close to the centre of Terrace.
The City is currently considering amendments to its zoning bylaw and official community plan necessary for the development to proceed. The Oct. 9 committee of the whole meeting is intended merely to provide additional information and will not be open for public feedback or comment, according to a City of Terrace statement. (The City will eventually hold an official public hearing about the proposed amendments as is required by law.)
“Council has already received significant interest and public feedback on this project,” the statement said. “[City] staff has determined a committee of the whole meeting will be a beneficial next step, as the proposed amendments are not ready for public hearing.”
The Oct. 9 meeting will include a timeline of next steps in the bylaw amendment process and information about how and when the public can provide input on the development. The meeting will also include information about a feasibility study regarding the proposed inland port that the City commissioned and released in February.
