The Gitanyow First Nation has signed an impact benefit agreement with BC Hydro in regards to the Northwest Transmission Line.
BC Hydro says the agreement will provide Gitanyow with employment, contracting, and other economic development opportunities related to the line's construction.
The 287kv Northwest Transmission Line will run 344km from the Skeena substation near Terrace and make its way north to Bob Quinn Lake, where it will be able to supply power to several planned mines and run-of-river projects in the area.
Just this April, members of the Gitanyow had said they wouldn't support the project because BC Hydro wasn't addressing issues like land management and habitat.
The agreement between the Gitanyow and BC Hydro was signed late last week in Vancouver. Other First Nations like the Nisga'a, Tahltan, Kitselas and Metlakatla have signed similar agreements with the company.
