Members of the Terrace Fire Department faced challenging conditions as they battled a late evening fire on Aug. 10 at a commercial complex on the 4500 block of Greig Avenue, housing businesses including OKTire.

“Within the structure fire, attack teams found a complex layout with almost no visibility due to intense smoke conditions,” said Terrace Fire Chief Chad Cooper.

Cooper’s team worked to contain a raging fire at the rear of the structure to prevent it from spreading.

He noted that damage was limited to a second-floor mezzanine storage room and part of an exterior wall.

“Fire crews proceeded to ventilate the remaining smoke inside the structure and limit damage and check for hidden concealed fire in the roof of the structure,” Cooper said. “Commercial structure fires pose a very high risk hazard to firefighters due to the layout and varying fire loads.”

Cooper praised the swift and forceful efforts of his team, crediting them with containing the fire and saving neighbouring businesses from damage. Crews were dispatched to the scene at about 10:13 p.m. on Aug. 10.

“The Terrace Fire Department would like to thank all our partner fire responder agencies that assisted,” he added.

No one was injured, and the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
