A crew from highways maintenance contractor Emil Anderson is inspecting the condition of a vehicle bridge along Queensway today following an early morning fire that started underneath it.

Crews from the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department responded quickly shortly after 8 a.m. to a report of flames and thick smoke coming from underneath the structure located near ABC Metal Recycling.

“Our crews reported to the site and controlled the fire,” said Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department Chief Rick Boehm.

There were no injuries and an investigation is underway into the fire’s cause.

The area underneath the bridge has been the location of an outdoor camp.

Despite the intensity of the fire, the bridge itself remains intact and there was no damage to the bridge, Boehm said.

He said some of the belongings of those camped underneath the bridge were lost in the fire.
