On Friday, Jan. 12, Terrace fire chief Chad Cooper presented a bravery award commending property manager Brian Allen for his quick reaction in extinguishing a fire at the Willow apartments on Nov. 3, 2023.

Cooper said Allen’s actions in extinguishing a fire on a balcony at the building adjacent to the pickleball courts on Kalum prevented what might have been a more serious situation.

“Upon being alerted by a bystander, his immediate response was to run towards the danger,” said Cooper.

Upon reaching the third floor and being confronted by the fire in the balcony, Allen retreived a fire extinguisher from the hallway and challenged the flames.

When the first extinguisher was exhausted, he secured another and continued to hold back the fire until firefighters arrived.

Allen’s actions ‘reset the fire clock’ allowing the fire crews to extinguish the remaning fire with less risk to lives and property.

“Brian’s actions exemplify the highest qualities we admire and strive for in our community: bravery, quick thinking, and a selfless commitment to the safety of others,” said Cooper.

Cooper said a cigarette in a planter on the patio was responsible for starting the fire.

Mayor Sean Bujtas also extended his gratitude to Brian for his act of bravery.
