Evacuation alerts have been issue for both Old Remo and New Remo as this week’s heat continues to melt snow causing the level of the Skeena River to rise.

The alerts come from the Kitimat-Stikine regional district’s emergency operations centre.

“At this time residents are not required to evacuate, however, people resident or present within the area are requested to prepare to leave the area with very short notice,” a notice issue this morning indicated.

“This alert may be followed by an immediate order to evacuate should conditions worsen. When an order is issued you must leave your home immediately and vacate the area by using the main route from your area,” said Lina Gasser, the director of the emergency operations center and regional district administrator.

Sandbags are now available at the Thornhill Fire Department at 3128 Hwy 16 East, Thornhill) on a self serve basis from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This location may change to address areas of need as the high water event develops.
