The Coast Mountains School District is asking for public feedback on its 2023-24 budget as part of its commitment to support student success and align with its strategic priorities.

The district’s budget funds all activities within its schools and is an essential part of fulfilling its commitments to students, according to the school board. The request for public input complies with the requirements of the B.C. School Act, which mandates Boards of Education to prepare and submit annual budgets to the Minister of Education and Child Care.

The district’s strategic plan for 2022-27, “Engage, Ignite, Empower,” identifies key areas of investment, such as improving learning outcomes, honouring and respecting culture, diversity and inclusion, and creating a culture of care by providing safe and welcoming spaces.

The Ministry of Education and Child Care primarily funds the district’s budget through a fixed amount per student. However, annual funding also depends on other factors, including district-wide enrolment, special needs considerations, and geographical factors, according to the school board’s website.

“Feedback received will play an important role in the development of the 2023/2024 budget,” Coast Mountains School Board writes on its website, highlighting the importance of community engagement in shaping the district’s fiscal plans.

The district has made the 2023-24 Budget & Planning Survey available for residents to fill out until May 19, inviting local residents to share their views and priorities for the upcoming school year. The Coast Mountains School District encourages anyone with an interest in the future of local education to participate in the survey and help shape the district’s strategic priorities. The survey can be accessed through the school district’s website.
