Residents of New Remo in the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine can breathe a sigh of relief as an evacuation order, excluding specific properties, was lifted Friday at 3 p.m.

The Regional District announced the rescindment of the Evacuation Order that was issued on May 16 for New Remo — with the exception of 2026, 2031 and 2045 Royal Rd., 6202 and 6206 Kilby Rd. — in a press release. Residents previously affected by the order are now able to return to their homes.

Homeowners are reminded to remain vigilant as an Evacuation Alert is still in effect for New Remo and Old Remo. The district states that, “an Evacuation Order may need to be reissued, if that is deemed necessary,” urging the community to stay informed and be prepared for the possibility of another evacuation order.

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine and the City of Terrace have several Evacuation Alerts in place for a number of other communities within their jurisdictions.
