In a video released today, both the former and current mayor of Terrace BC call on the community to support the development of a purpose-built and permanent Foundry center for Terrace, BC.
In the video interview, Terrace Mayor, Sean Bujitas points to Terrace experiencing three times the homelessness of Vancouver, BC and calls on public to support Terrace and District Community Services Society (TDCSS) in achieving a permanent low-barrier health and wellness center for youth in Terrace.
Terrace High-School Principal, Jane Arbuckle, recounts 30-years of teaching in the community and the changing face of drug use: “When I was teaching in 1991, the number of youth that I was aware of that were struggling with drugs, maybe grade twelve, maybe grade eleven… 30 years later, grade seven, grade eight,” Arbuckle says in the video.
TDCSS currently manages the interim Foundry site. TDCSS Executive Director, Michael McFetridge, calls the Foundry model “cutting edge.” The permanent Foundry site will provide Terrace youth ‘one door’ to a host of health services including medical and mental health as well as peer support.
Groundbreaking of the new Foundry site is expected this fall.
