The Terrace Standard is proud to introduce a new series, “Skeena Stories: The Undocumented Past of Terrace, B.C.” Our latest journalistic endeavour is dedicated to uncovering and shedding light on the historic events of our city that have, up until now, slipped through the cracks of documentation or been barely mentioned in existing historical and online records.

Terrace, nestled within the Skeena River valley and rich with First Nations culture, has a long and varied past that includes tales of indigenous culture, pioneering explorers, ambitious entrepreneurs, and the development of our diverse and vibrant community. However, not all of these fascinating stories have found their way into the limelight.

The series’ mission is to ensure that the lesser-known facets of our history are chronicled in print, preserving them for future generations. It is also a quest to dive deeper into events and personalities that may have been recorded, but not in sufficient depth, and to provide the residents of Terrace, as well as history aficionados everywhere, a more comprehensive understanding of our city’s vibrant past.

“Skeena Stories” will embark on its mission through research, interviews and detective work. It will examine historical documents, oral histories, personal memoirs, and any other sources that might provide insights into our rich heritage. The series will also give voice to those who have been a part of these under-documented events, sharing their memories and experiences to create a more contextual and nuanced historical record.

The inaugural edition of “Skeena Stories,” set to publish later this week, will delve into the floods and wildfires of 1978.

We are excited to embark on this historical journey with our readers and invite everyone to participate in this exploration of our past. As the saying goes, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” With “Skeena Stories,” we aim to help our community remember and learn from its past, celebrate its achievements, and better understand its place in the world.

Readers are strongly encouraged to get in touch with “Skeena Stories” author, Viktor Elias. Whether you’re holding on to a fascinating family tale, a trove of old documents, or have knowledge of an event that you believe deserves attention, your contributions are welcomed.

Elias can be reached at (250) 638-7283 ext. 5411 or via email at viktor.elias@terracestandard.com. It’s through the power of community collaboration that the past can be brought to life with accuracy, detail, and the respect it deserves.

Help us illuminate the untold stories of Terrace — each memory and piece of information could be a pivotal piece of our shared historical jigsaw puzzle.
