A northwestern B.C. development company has been singled out for going above and beyond in ensuring the health and safety of its employees.
The Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC) has been awarded a Certificate of Recognition (COR) from WorksafeBC, which TNDC says reinforces their commitment to protecting workers and maintaining a progressive safety culture.
The corporation said it has been strengthening its health and safety practices, processes and procedures over the past 18 months with the 14 Elements of COR, which are outlined by the BC Construction Safety Alliance — the certifying partner for WorkSafeBC. Documentation, observation and interviews are the three verification techniques that are used by an independent external auditor when conducting certification. TNDC’s COR health and safety audit took place in October 2023.
According to WorkSafeBC, the COR is a voluntary program intended to motivate employers to take a proactive role in ensuring the health and safety of their employees. It then recognizes and rewards employers who have gone beyond the current legal requirements, implemented an effected occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) and passed the certification audit.
“The health and safety of our employees and those we work with is TNDC’s top priority,” said Bruce Gordichuk, WorkSafe BC’s president of construction and interim CEO. “Becoming COR certified is an important strategy to support our goal that everyone goes home safe, while driving TNDC’s strategic growth.”
Gordichuk goes on to praise the leadership of TNDC for attaining COR certification for the corporation.
“Successfully achieving COR – under the leadership of Nick Naugle, TNDC’s director of health, safety & environment – is a major milestone that will bring significant benefits to our business and reputation, including enhancing TNDC’s competitiveness as a socially responsible Tier 1 mining services provider and employer of choice.”
