Students of Coast Mountain College attended the first-ever career fair on March 16, as they prepare to finish school and enter the workforce.

The event aimed to connect well-qualified local job seekers with local businesses while providing an opportunity for students to learn important skills like networking and self-promotion.

“Transferable skills, like speaking professionally and connecting with prospective employers, are important for success in any field,” said Associate Dean Tracey Woodburn. “Many instructors at the College see the value in providing this opportunity for future graduates in a supportive environment.”

Nineteen businesses representing many different industries attended. Pending positive feedback from the students and community, the college plans to replicate this model in the future at Terrace, Smithers, Prince Rupert, and Hazelton campuses.

New graduates provide unique value to employers, according to Coast Mountain College Human Resources Manager Stefanie Pellegrino.

“They’ve studied the latest academic research in a field and can offer fresh perspectives and ideas. We have hired many of our own graduates with great success and want other businesses to have the same experience,” she said.
