Roderick Brown is a wood sculptor based on banks of the Skeena River, just outside Terrace, B.C. Rod was born and raised in Ontario where he grew up around the lakes and forests of central Ontario. He’s always had a passion for creating art and it was his family’s move to BC in 2009 that set his career in wood sculpting in motion. Rod’s current studio work specializes in stylized fish and wildlife sculptures. The art festival will showcase the works of many artists at the Terrace Art Gallery throughout the month of August. Following the widespread salmon fishery closures along the Skeena and Nass Rivers, organizers said this exhibit will provide a way for people to express their strong admiration for the fish through artistic expression.

Each week until the end of August the Terrace Standard will be showcasing a contributing artist to the Skeena Salmon Art Festival at the Terrace Art Gallery. Following the widespread salmon fishery closures along the Skeena and Nass Rivers, organizers hope the exhibit will provide a way for people to express their strong admiration for the fish through artistic expression.

In this feature series, the artists will share their thoughts on the subject in their own words.

This week’s artist, Roderick Brown:

“Skeena salmon have and continue to be the main source of inspiration in my work. I feel honoured and humbled by the support of our community for this festival and my art in general. So much of what Terrace is, and has been, revolves around this iconic fish. I am very grateful for the folks that have taken the initiative to kickstart this festival and I look forward to being a part of many more.”
