Smithers’ artist Facundo Gastia stands in front of the colourful salmon mural on the Stantec Building at 4623 Park Avenue with artists Amanda Hugon and Travis Hebert on August 9. The team of three started the mural on August 6 and worked throughout the week to paint it as a commission for the Salmon Art Festival.

Each week until the end of August the Terrace Standard will be showcasing a contributing artist to the Skeena Salmon Art Festival at the Terrace Art Gallery. Following the widespread salmon fishery closures along the Skeena and Nass Rivers, organizers hope the exhibit will provide a way for people to express their strong admiration for the fish through artistic expression.

In this feature series, the artists will share their thoughts on the subject in their own words.

This week’s artist, Facundo Gastia:

“Salmon is such an important part for the North, for everyone really. It’s an animal that is key in the ecosystem but it’s under attack. We need to bring it to the focus, because if you know about it, if you see it, if you eat it, you will care about it and you will protect it. This piece is going to bring some colour and some life, and bring awareness too.”
