SUWILAAWKS COMMUNITY School students gathered in the gym today to celebrate Hobiyee with the Gitlaxdax Dancers

DRUMS THUNDERED in the gym of the Clarence Michiel buidling as Suwilaawks Community School students celebrated Hobiyee, the Nisga'a New Year, earlier this afternoon. Some students donned their paper oolichans and danced along with the Gitlaxdax Dancers, who taught them some of their songs and danced around the gym.Hobiye'e takes place in the third week of February.Nisga'a astrologers watch for the last quarter of the moon and believe it will indicate whether the coming year will be a bountiful one.If the moon faces rightside up, it means the next year will be plentiful and people celebrate. If the moon faces upside down, it means the year will not be plentiful – no fish or berries – and the people would not even celebrate.Instead they would start to prepare for the tough months ahead.
