Thirty children enrolled in Kermode Friendship Society’s daycare now have two new playgrounds to enjoy.
Both playgrounds have been well-used since they opened last month, says Cal Albright, Kermode executive director. The larger playground is complete with slides, climbing equipment and other features. A smaller playground for children under three years is located just behind it with a garden, where staff grow peas, potatoes and sunflower plants.
“Kids can do what they do, jump around and play on stuff,” Albright says. “It all helps for development — they now have somewhere safe to climb and explore.”

In January, Four Rivers Co-op donated $10,000 from their Community Support Fund to help the society build a new playground for their daycare on Park Avenue. The society is one of 10 organizations to receive money from the program this year.
“When you support organizations and groups that support their communities, everyone benefits. Helping to build a safe playground for all children in the community is a project that we are proud to support,” says Bud Pye, president of the board of directors for Four Rivers Co-op.
The rest of the funding for the $60,000 playground came from Kermode’s capital costs to complement the daycare, which opened in October last year.
