Terrace RCMP are hitting the streets to help Crime Stoppers corral “criminals” city-wide for this year’s annual Jail and Bail fundraiser.

The aim is to put people behind bars until they can raise enough monetary donations for bail, helping out with Crime Stopper’s goal of raising $4,000 today.

Mr. Mikes is also on hand to help raise funds with a barbecue next to the criminal proceedings.

Const. Mathew Clarabut and Const. Danny Chan brought the first suspect to the mercy of the judge outside the Bell Media building on Lazelle Avenue just after 11 a.m. this morning.

“So Romel.. you’ve been charged with disruptive behaviour, what do you have to say for yourself?” said Judge Bryan Crampton to Romel Evardo, manager at the Husky Gas Station.

The 26-year old was given a couple seconds to plead his case before the gavel was brought down hard. “Guilty!”

Bail was set at $50 and Evardo was placed in behind bars to contemplate his crimes. “What is my charge again?” he laughed. With a quick phone call, Evardo came up with the money and was released. But not before the sound of sirens came up close behind, carrying another suspect - 12-year old soccer player Emily Kriegl.

Her crime? A lethal shot on the soccer pitch. Her bail was not given a specific amount, but was described as “high.”

“It’s been a while since I’ve been here,” Kriegl joked. Her dad, who she believed sent in the anonymous tip, was close behind to help get her out.

MLA Ellis Ross was also found among the inmates this afternoon, charged with messaging and texting instead of answering his phone. His bail was set at a staggering $100 - at 12:30 p.m. he had $65 to raise before he could walk out of there.

“The conditions here are hell - there’s no coffee, they’re just offering water,” Ross lamented behind bars. “We want coffee!”

The fundraiser has been a long-standing event during the city’s Riverboat Days festival, serving up justice until to 2 p.m. today.
