Caledonia Secondary School’s grad scholarship and bursary night broke a record for this year’s graduating students.

The total value of all the scholarships presented hit $302,806 and was distributed between 68 students on Thursday, June 14. The entrance scholarships alone were valued at $194,716 the highest amount ever awarded, according to Robin MacLeod, vice principal.

While the monetary value of the entrance scholarships was high, a bulk of the night was covered by local scholarships awarded to graduating students from residents and local businesses.

“I had 110 envelopes that I had prepared, where 110 times we handed an envelope to somebody that was worth at least $475,” MacLeod said.

One big-ticket item this year was the Royal Military Scholarship, worth $77,568. When the crowd was told that Deirdre Lind had won, they were astounded, according to MacLeod. She said Lind had also been recognized for three other scholarships but had decided to give them up so that other students could benefit.

“She’s a high ranking student,” MacLeod said about Lind, a French immersion student headed to pursue her engineering degree for the Canadian Armed Forces. Lind will spend her first year at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu school in Quebec, followed by three years at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario.

There were also three new scholarships awarded this year, including the Max Botelho Memorial Trades $1,000 scholarship, the Ian Bagg Commemorative $500 scholarship, and the Jennifer Lang Memorial $2,000 scholarship.
