Terrace's seven- and eight-year-old hockey players are facing off at the Terrace Sportsplex in a regional Novice minor hockey tournament this weekend.

The little players are excited to hit the ice for some friendly competition, and three Terrace teams are playing with eight teams from Smithers, Hazelton and Prince Rupert.

“The kids are pretty excited,” said Hilary Lightening, one of the hockey moms who is helping organize the tournament.

“They love to play hockey and they work really hard.”

It's all about having fun at this level, and just enjoying the experience of playing, she said, adding that the focus is simply to encourage the little ones in their play.

Entry is free but there will be door prizes and 50/50 draws, basket raffles and loonie sticks to fundraise for Terrace Minor Hockey.

“It would be great if people came and cheered on the kids,” Lightening said.

Teams are playing in the main rink, two cross ice games at a time, and below is the schedule for the weekend.
