The Caledonia Kermodes Senior girls are preparing to go to zones in Smithers Feb. 26th.

The team got off to a rocky start this year when it started its season one month late because there was no coach available.

Current coach Paul Hanna said because of this, the team is missing a solid month of practice time, which has affected its play.

“Normally they would start around the beginning of November,” said Hanna. “That's been a struggle with this team.”

Hanna said a bright spot in the season is the players’ commitment to go to zones, no matter how many players are available.

“They recognize that things aren't as good as they would like it to be in terms of success, and they’re still keen to go play, even if they are down to six players,” Hanna said.

Hanna said the team has got in some good games so far.

They recently took on the Rupert Rainmakers Feb. 9 at home, and lost 42-16.

That game, as well as a few others, recently was interrupted for the team as two of their critical players were in Prince Rupert playing in the All Native Basketball Tournament.

Hanna said next year will be a more powerful year for the team, calling this season more of a building year.
