The Old Timers and facing off against rec league champions this Saturday

The Terrace adult rec hockey league is concluding with a classic ‘battle of the ages’ next Saturday. The season showdown is pitting a select team of old timers against the champion rec league team March 11.

It’s a test for whether experience can trump young energy, and outgoing league president Steve Smyth was enthusiastic about the battle.

“Bragging rights as to whether stealth and experience beats speed and energy will be on the line,” he stressed.

The young guys will be represented by the champions of the rec hockey league this year.

In the running as of today, Mach 8, were two-time rec league champions Norms Auto and Sorochan Wood and Metal.

Those two finalists faced off in Game 2 of the final series last night, March 7, and were tied 1-1 at the break.

Norms scored to go up 2-1 and then salted the win away with an empty netter to win 3-1, relayed Smyth.

Since Sorochan won Game 1 of the series, this win puts the teams 1-1 in the series.

The third and deciding game for the rec league champions is Thursday night at 8:45 p.m. at the Hidber rink.

The winning team will advance to play in the beverage bowl against the old timers.

The roster of old timers includes two guys from each of the old timer teams this year. The select roster includes Phillip Barron, Steven Chant, Travis Lamming, Matt Leblanc, Mike Leblond, Bill Leffers, Darcy Mallett, Dave Merrit, Brad Owens, Colin Parr, Rory Reinbolt, Brent Rogers, Yves Thidobeau and Corey Tranlberg. Goalies are Cory Croft and Branden Green, and Smyth will be coaching.

Come out for the battle of the ages at 7:45 p.m. March 11.

Entry is by donation to the food bank.
