It was the Terrace Northmen up against the Prince Rupert Seamen in the North West League trophy battle July 16 at Northwest Community College, and Terrace did not disappoint, winning the match 54 – 14.
However, veteran Don Hill said the final score did not reflect how close the game really was.
“Both teams were very aggressive and played very skillfully and hard,” Hill explained.
He said from the kick-off both teams battled, with no scoring for the first few minutes, until Adam Linteris broke through and put Terrace on the score board.
“After that jitters and nerves were gone and both teams were furiously battling for possession of the ball,” Hill said.
Terrace quickly made use of its forwards, opening up the field and allowing two more players to score, Arlen Fifield and Craig Dunfield.
The Seamen fought back before the half way mark, and the Northmen found themselves on the defensive, hemmed in their own end, until a try was scored by Seamen's Werner Pienaar.
In the second half both teams utilized momentum, however, it was the Northmen who raked in the tries with several break away runs. Mike Merjers, and Hill both scored twice, Linteris scored again and Skylar Sandhals scored his first try.
Pienaar managed another one for the Seamen, but it would be the team’s last in the game. Hill said Walker Main was pivotal in kicking, gaining 12 more points for the Northmen by converting six of
the nine tries for his team.
The Northmen have been undefeated in the northwest zone so far this year.
