A gun can be for self protection

Dear Sir: I am glad to know that Ms. Claudette Sandecki feels she is too old and too clumsy to own and safely operate a firearm for self defence in her "I won't be a gun totin' granny" column of Aug. 17, 2011 on www.terracestandard.com. We certainly don't want anybody hurting themselves.

Dear Sir:

I am glad to know that Ms. Claudette Sandecki feels she is too old and too clumsy to own and safely operate a firearm for self defence in her "I won't be a gun totin' granny" column of Aug. 17, 2011 on www.terracestandard.com. We certainly don't want anybody hurting themselves.

I'm OK with that, it's her opinion and her choice. But that's not to say that other people shouldn't have the option of doing so if they wanted to.

Not so long ago it seems, it was perfectly acceptable for my grandmother to have a handgun in her purse for protection... and guess what, back then you seldom read of home invasion or seniors getting beaten up either.

Could it be that criminals are afraid of people who can defend themselves? Maybe that's where they came up with the expression: An armed society is a polite society.
