July 2, 1944 - October 24, 2020
They loved each other so much in life, they could not wait to see each other again. Wendy Arlene Giesbrecht (DeLair) passed away peacefully on October 24, 2020, with family at her side.
Predeceased by her husband, Helmut, on October 9, 2020, she is survived by her children Shelley (Andrew) and Shawn (Tanya); her grandchildren Madison (Jon), Skila and Johanna; her brothers Jack and Gord; her sister Audrey; and many nieces and nephews.
Wendy was born on July 2, 1944, in Abbotsford BC to one of the area's pioneer families. The youngest of 11 children and the daughter of a farmer, she saw first-hand the importance of hard work and service to the community.
In Grade 13 she met the love of her life and, after obtaining her elementary teaching education from UBC, they relocated to Terrace. Wendy taught at many Terrace schools before taking the position of kindergarten teacher at Suwilaaks Community School, where she taught until her retirement in 2004. All her life, Wendy loved children and she continued to follow her students as they grew up.
Diagnosed with Parkinson's soon after her retirement, the "golden years" brought challenges for Wendy. She did not let this slow her down, continuing to participate in Scottish Country Dancing, serve on the board of Knox United Church, and volunteer for many church activities and events.
Wendy will be sadly missed for her kindness, her willingness to help others and her love of family and friends, which she often showed through her baking. It was not unusual to walk into her kitchen and smell freshly baked apple pie or find a cookie jar full of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
Her family takes comfort in knowing that she and Helmut are together again, and she is forever free to dance.
Wendy's family would like to thank the staff at Terraceview Lodge for caring for Wendy over the past year. There will be no service and in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Muscular Dystrophy Canada or Parkinson Society British Columbia.
