SKYE MORGAN

MCGOWAN

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Skye Morgan McGowan. Skye will be dearly missed by his wife Stacey and their three children, Lachlan (12), Madeleine (8) and Elise (4) as well as his father, Alan of Terrace, brother Joe and wife Peggy, nephew Drew and niece Paige of Cranbrook, and sister Sharon and her husband John Boe of Vancouver. Skye was predeceased by his mother, Mary.

Skye was born in Kitimat and moved to Terrace at the age of six with his family. Upon graduating from Caledonia Sr. Secondary, he attended the University of Victoria, graduating with a BA in English, certification as a high school English teacher and qualification as an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor.

While teaching ESL at UVIC Skye met the father of one of his Japanese students and together they opened an English language school in Tokyo, The Skye English School.

1994 brought Skye and his wife Stacey back to Victoria where Skye completed a Master’s degree in Linguistics. Skye and Stacey welcomed their first child, Lachlan in 1998, and moved to Alberta where Skye began teaching at Bert Church high school in Airdrie. It was at Bert Church that Skye pioneered a Japanese language program and a philosophy program, two of the first for high schools in Canada. The couple bought an old farmhouse in nearby Carstairs and in 2001, their second child, Madeleine, was born, followed in 2006 by Elise.

Skye was a renaissance man in every way: quoting Shakespeare while renovating his old house. He loved being a teacher and contributing to the betterment of his students lives. Most of all he loved being a father and spending time with his children.

Two educational trust funds have been set up for Skye’s children. Donations can be made at the Terrace Royal Bank (in trust for Lachlan, Madeline and Elise McGowan) 4640 Lakelse Ave. Terrace, BC. V8G 1R2. In Carstairs, donations can be made at the Bank of Montreal, Box 489 Carstairs, AB, T0M 0N0 (in trust for the McGowan children).
