May 16, 1929 - June 10, 2019
John passed away quickly and peacefully in his home on the evening of June 10th just weeks after his 90th Birthday celebration. He will be missed tremendously by his wife Larisa, and family Bente (Manfred), Inga (Sam), Frank (Wendy), Robert Mikael (Freda). John's grandchildren Gino, Adriana, Paul, Jacqueline, Peter, Samuel, Lori, Jonathan, Brandy, Amanda, Darlene, Margie and Dane. John loved seeing the grandchildren and their families and his great grandchildren.
John grew up in Denmark and he loved the ocean and it was a favourite way to spend time. John's early life was spent working with his father in his carpentry shop. He grew up in occupied Denmark during WWII. Later he joined the merchant navy and travelled the world.
John always loved having boats and the various family members have many stories about the boat adventures. A trip from Vancouver to Kitimat when he was well into his 80s, with crew members Frank Jensen, Joe Murphy and Jeff Smith.
When John came to Canada he first settled in Vancouver and after having a number of various jobs, he settled on his love carpentry. He did house repairs and house framing. His dream was to have a cabinet shop so he decided to go to Kitimat and with his family traveled in a large old station wagon. Here he found his life long passion working to better the lives of working peoples and their families. He was involved with working to protect the environment and fight for a Socialist society, for Aboriginal rights and the next fifty years every battle around these issues he was there. John was proud of his Union activities as a member and Business agent of the International Carpenters Union and later a leading member of the fight for the Canadian Carpenters Union (CMAW). He was president of the Kitimat Terrace Labour Council for 50 years. He was also a college instructor and coordinator of the Workers Education program at NorthWest Community College, where he endeavoured to educate students about rights and history. John was a passionate Trade Unionist who always stood on the worker's side.
Our special thanks to all the exceptional Doctors Dr. M. Kenyon, Dr. E. Iyayi, Dr. S. Mc Coach and Home Support for their kindness and support.
