Our beloved Jennifer passed away peacefully but far too soon at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Delta on September 27 after an advanced cancer diagnosis in May. She was 50 years old.
Jen is profoundly missed by her husband of 22 years Jeff, her brother Ron and sister-in-law Shirley, her mother Barbara, her nephew Alex, and many friends and relatives. Jennifer was predeceased by her father Frank Lang.
Born in Vancouver, Jennifer grew up in West Vancouver attending Ridgeview Elementary and then West Vancouver Secondary. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a history degree, then went on to the Journalism program at Langara College.
In 1994, she headed north to Terrace, where she would find not only adventure in the wilds of northwestern B.C., but an exciting career as a young newspaper reporter, and the love of her life.
Jen and Jeff built a wonderful life there together, exploring the world near and far through hiking, skiing and travel.
Always passionate about issues, politics and history, Jennifer was a voracious reader, a proud feminist, and a lover of music, movies and nature.
As a community newspaper journalist first at the Terrace Times, then at the Terrace Standard, and later at the Cloverdale Reporter, she championed local issues and the people who were passionate about them.
Jen covered major stories, including the negotiation of B.C.'s first modern-day treaty with the Nisga'a and the trial of the serial killer who murdered dozens of missing women.
But she is most remembered for her coverage and devotion to the stories of individual families and their concerns.
It was at the Cloverdale Reporter, where, as the editor for eight years until 2016, Jen's warmth, generosity, and energy shone brightest, leaving an indelible mark in the community.
Her caring and giving spirit will be remembered and missed by many, wherever they encountered Jennifer.
A celebration of life will take place in Cloverdale March 23, 2018.
