Feb 4, 1940 - Mar 9, 2018
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ian Douglas Anderson, who left us peacefully at Prince George University Hospital on March 9, 2018. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Beverley, sister Sheila, son Erik (Sarah, grandson Spencer), step-son Matthew (grandchildren Mitchell, Chloe, Mattelyn, great-grandchild Kaydence). Ian is predeceased by his older brother James (Annette).

Ian was born in Hamilton, Ontario to Thomas and Elsie Anderson. He completed a BA (Honours) in Geography at McMaster University (1969) and a Masters of Geography at Simon Fraser University (1971). It was at SFU where he met Erik's mother, Karen.

In the mid-1970's Ian took a job teaching at Northwest Community College and moved with his family to Round Lake near Telkwa. Erik and Karen have many fond memories of camping and canoeing trips during their time together in Northern BC.

Ian and Beverley married in 1981 on Mayne Island, then settled in Hazelton, BC, with Matthew. Ian and Bev created a fulfilling and diverse life surrounded by Bev's family, and the wide open spaces he enjoyed so much. He was a prominent member of the First Nations community and involved in environmental activism. He was adopted into the Gitxsan Wolf Clan.

Ian had a wide spectrum of careers that touched many lives, including teaching, prospecting and guide outfitting. For a time he was Gitxsan Territory community planner and Aboriginal liaison for the Ministry of Forests and Ministry of Environment.

Ian was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time exploring the Northern Territories and the many backroads of the North, as well as canoeing, boating, skiing, camping, and fly fishing. Ian taught many the importance and joys of reading - a good book or newspaper was never far away. In his later years Ian looked forward to trips to North Vancouver to visit with his new grandson.

Ian's passing leaves a void in our lives, but we take comfort in the wonderful memories of the many experiences and stories he shared with us all.

A funeral service and celebration of Ian's life will be held in Kispiox, BC, at the Kispiox Community Hall, on May 25, 2018 at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Hazelton Public Library.
