HUGH WALTER HEPBURN

Born January 24, 1940

Died May 14, 2009

Hugh Hepburn was born in Vancouver, the only child of William and Isabel Hepburn. Following high school, he studied accountancy and earned his Chartered Accountant (CA) designation in 1965. Work and family life led him to Smithers, then to Calgary before he settled in Terrace in 1976 where he established his own firm in 1984. That same year, he married Bella Cortez.

In his three decades in Terrace, Hugh was active in the Lions Club, St Matthews Anglican Church, and on the Terrace Public Library Board. In 2005, he moved to Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast and into semi-retirement. That year, the CA Institute of BC awarded him its Ritchie W. McCloy Award for CA Volunteerism. He continued his involvement with the Lions, joining both the Pender Harbour and Sunshine Coast Clubs. In 2006, he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest possible honour given to a Lions member.

After a brief struggle with cancer, Hugh passed away in his home. He is survived by his wife, Bella, and children Marie, Peter (Conrad), Carlos, Mark, and Nigel.

The family thanks the doctors of St. Mary’s Hospital in Sechelt and the Pender Harbour Health Centre home care nurses. They also thank the extended family and many friends for their calls and visits during Hugh’s illness.
