September 5, 1934 - March 20, 2022
His last shift has finally come
The Lord blew the whistle and said "Come Home"
The crew have gone to bed, the equipment has been parked and shut down
It's time for you to finally come home!
Gerry finally retired from his busy life on March 20,2022 at approximately 8 pm. We laughed at the fact that Mom might be waiting with a broom in hand to chase him into heavens gates....She's been waiting for a while now and he's been wondering where she's been.
As his nephew said: "The leader of the band is gone but his songs go on and on!" -Steve Prosser
Born to Mary and Melvin Prosser September 5 th,1934 near Kinsella Alberta.
Predeceased by his wife Joyce, his siblings Lorna ,Bob, Arnold, and his grandson Ben Hull.
Survived by his Three children Cindy Reid, Leona Prosser (John Muise) and Gerald Prosser Jr. (Brenda). Grandchildren: Amanda, Sarah, Jeffrey, Lindsay, Carrie, Brian, Tyler , Graydon and 13 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
Gerry often said, "children make the world go round". He loved his Grandkids!
Gerry came to B.C., in 1956 to work. He rode the train back and forth to Kitimat where he ran equipment leveling ground at what is now the Kildala area of the Kitimat townsite.
In 1957 he went back to Alberta to marry his wife, Joyce. They then traveled back by train where they made Terrace, B.C. their home and built their family and their house. Family was everything to them both!
He worked over the years providing a loving and nurturing home for his family. Building roads through the Nass valley, West Kalum, Copper and running whatever equipment needed for the task, even fighting forest fires. At one point he became a road construction foreman for the local sawmill, Twin River Timber/ Repap, where he worked for much of his career. He was very conscientious about his work, it garnered much respect from his coworkers, and upon being retired from that position he would do odd jobs for anyone needing a helping hand.
He, along with his brother Arnold, worked for the Skeena Valley Golf Club running equipment to put in the back 9. He always needed to be busy and often liked woodworking creating toys for the grandkids, Brenda's (Daughter-In-Law) white picket fence, rocking horse, wagons, wishing wells, birdhouses ,clocks, piggy banks, wooden jewelry boxes and a few burl tables. Then there was his vegetable garden, where he spent many hours puttering away, gum boots and cowboy hat!
Growing up in Alberta, Gerry was an avid horseman, ranch hand, cowboy, trapper, and outdoorsman. It was a way to make a living as a kid and put food on the table for the family. This continued through the years in Terrace, minus the horses until Cindy was able to convince him that she needed one. He had a great compassion for animals, which was passed down to all the kids, but especially to Leona.
He loved his hunting (Honorary mention in Boone & Crocket for Mountain goat), many moose and deer as well as fishing expeditions with his brothers and friends and eventually his son, Gerald Jr. Many stories were shared over drinks, campfires, and family gatherings. He and Joyce took up boating and did many fishing trips in the Douglas Channel and Prince Rupert, and after that, they decided RVing was great fun, touring the USA and Canada.
His favorite pastime was campfires, telling jokes, singing and guitar picking, later he taught himself how to play the fiddle.
Often entertaining friends and family while camping at Mile 31 or gathering at Harley's Place for the riverside festival, with amazing musicians and friends, creating a bond with a crew from Wrangell Alaska. Over the years Gerry and Joyce developed many lifelong friends. Too many to name. The Prosser House was always open to anyone, and many lifelong friends have come through their door.
For his last, almost 5 years, he was at Terrace-view Lodge due to dementia. He could often be heard singing and serenading the staff. The Staff was very wonderful to him, and the family is so grateful for that. To the ladies he could be heard singing "Hey, Hey Good Looking, what ya got cookin", and his supervisory skills continued as he tried to organize the staff to do their work. As the children of Joyce and Gerry Prosser, we have been truly blessed by our parents and we are so grateful to the many wonderful people at Terrace-view who helped make dads stay as good as possible. Thank you so very much.
' Keep on Smilin'
-Gerry.
