Emma was born in Poland, the fourth of six children of Edmund and Luise Prochnau. She was adopted by her aunt and uncle Anna and Willy Schmidt, who took her to Canada in 1949.
In 1955 she moved to Calgary and became a Practical Nurse. In 1961 she married Reinhold Koerner and they moved to Terrace in 1965, where they had four children.
In 1971, they moved to Old Remo where they grew fruits and vegetables and raised their children. She was part of the original group that started the Skeena Valley Farmers Market.
Emma worked for 10 years at Choices in Terrace caring for disable children prior to moving back to Terrace in 2010.
Emma passed away peacefully after a brief illness on October 31, 2020.

She is predeceased by her husband Reinhold & survived by her sons David (Yvonne) & Gerhard (Maria), daughters Margarete (Rob) Mertin, Esther (Shawn) Enns and grandchildren Joel & Paul Koerner, Cory & Molly Mertin, Austin & Emma Enns.
Emma was faithful to the Lord - She is now rejoicing in heaven.
