It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Don Gillanders. Don passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer, on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the age of 71 years.
Don was born March 5, 1948 in Vancouver, B.C. to Kenneth & Margaret Gillanders. He spent his early years living on Vancouver Island in Chemainus and Nanaimo and moved with his family to Abbotsford, B.C. in his high school years. There he met the love of his life, Anne Zomar, and they married in 1971.
Don worked in construction in Vancouver while getting his electrician papers. Four years later in 1975, Don took a job in Terrace, B.C. where he started his career as a Substation Maintenance Electrician at B.C. Hydro. He also built the family home this same year which is where he lived for 44 years. Three children were born to Don & Anne over the next 6 years. Don retired from B.C. Hydro with 35 years of service.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth & Margaret Gillanders. He is survived by his wife Anne of 48 years, children Jeff (Shasta), Julie (Anthony) Reynolds and Kevin (Katharine). Don also had the pleasure of being a Grandpa to Rylan, Landon, Carson, Olivia and Nathan. Don also leaves behind his sister Barbara (Frank) Kika and dozens of brother and sister-in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Don's life will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Gillanders backyard at 4518 Eby Street in Terrace from 2 to 5 pm. Memorial donations to the B.C. Cancer Foundation for lung cancer would be greatly appreciated.
